Accentuate the Positive in Your Life and Business

I often get asked how do you stay motivated and not discouraged when your business isn’t working like you’d want it to. I have a confession to make…I really wish I could say that I was motivated all the time but the truth is, I’m not. I’m really just like you and I’ve had my ups and downs in life and business. The difference could be, I don’t let the bad stuff keep me down for long! I keep digging and digging until I find my way out of a sales slump, a gloomy cycle, grief, and just about anything. I find strength in a variety of ways and I vow to myself that through God nothing bad is going to last forever, and it doesn’t.

Here are a few ways you can begin to focus on the good and positive and begin to eliminate the negative in your life.

  1. Take time to be grateful for all you have.  I’m often too busy thinking about what’s not going right to really be thankful for all the blessings in my life. Every cloud has a silver lining, every challenge has a great outcome on the other side if you stay focused and don’t give up. When I’ve had a down time in my business and been on the verge of calling it quits I take some quiet time to reflect. The first thing I do is take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle and make 2 columns. At the top of the first column I write “What’s Wrong” and at the top of the second column I write “What’s Right.”
Then I begin writing down everything that isn’t going right in my business or life. It could be back-ordered items, not enough business, no referrals that are on my “What’s Wrong” list and then I begin listing all the good things. I really love being my own boss, setting my own hours, controlling my income (even if it does get shaky once in awhile) and I love the products and being able to help people, I love helping others build a successful business…and pretty soon the “What’s Right” list is much longer than the other. I take scissors and cut the columns, review and then throw away the “What’s Wrong” list and hang the “What’s Right” list over my desk and focus on the good things and it’s funny because more good things begin to occur.
  2. Detach from your devices once in awhile. I know this is a killer but the more I’m connected to everyone and everything in as many ways as possible the less time I have for me and my thoughts. If you have challenges in your business and your life sometimes it’s best to just disconnect and have some quiet time to reflect. It’s difficult for an overly stimulated mind to come up with solutions so you’ve got to allow yourself some down time. My solution is to turn everything off and go into my library or outdoors when it’s nice with a legal pad of paper. I have no particular agenda in mind, I just start thinking and pretty soon, I’m writing whatever comes to my mind. It could be a new article, it could be a cool script I want to teach on a call, it could be a way to save more for retirement…I just keep writing.
Do yourself and your over-stimulated brain a favor and power everything down for at least a couple hours each week and give yourself some time off from everything. You’ll be glad you did!
  3. Count your blessings. Since reading “7 Levels of Communication” by Michael Maher this past fall I have been writing in my “Blessings Book” almost daily, 5 things I am grateful for. I’m grateful for my family and my health, the beauty of nature and a variety of other things. Taking a few minutes every day to write down my blessings has really been “eye-opening” and helped me realize how blessed I am. Another easy project is to create a “Gratitude Jar” and take time now and then to write down what you are grateful for and review them on New Year’s Eve!
  4. Take time to say Thank You. Even better, take time to send a thank you note to someone who helped you or was gracious to you or who remembered you in a special way. Send than you notes to your clients, customers, those who have referred business to you and watch as more business suddenly appears!  Sending Thank You notes seems to be a lost art that is in need of revival. You may not think that such a little gesture could mean so much but I can show you a stack of Thank You Notes that I’ve been collecting for over 20 years. Many of them from consultants who took time to thank me for being a good leader, or for their contest prize or a special party. Every once in awhile I get them out and remember the people who appreciated what I did for them. NEVER underestimate the power of a handwritten Thank You note!
  5. Believe anything is POSSIBLE. I have a sign hanging over my desk right now that says “When you focus on POSSIBILITIES instead of PROBLEMS…You will see more OPPORTUNITIES in your life!” Wow, that’s powerful and so true! Focusing on problems creates more problems and you have less time to really focus on everything that you want that is just within your reach if you only believed. There’s another sign over the desk in my library (Desk #2 of 3) that is a quote my mother wrote in her yearbook, “She can because…she BELIEVES she CAN!” Oh Yeah, there’s another one over the door in my office that reads, “Shoot for the Moon; even if you miss you’ll land among the stars!” I have surrounded myself with visual reminders that anything is possible!
  6. Get rid of the drama. I DON’T DO DRAMA! I don’t  have time for it and it zaps my energy. Get rid of the drama (and people who cause it) in your life. Let’s face it some people are just meant to miserable. They look miserable, act miserable and feel miserable ALL the TIME! Everything is wrong, nothing is going well and they sure want you to know about it. They LOVE to talk about other people and they want to suck you into the gossip circle! I have one word of advice for you, RUN as fast as you can and as far away as possible. Nothing good ever comes from gossip, drama or whatever  you want to call it. Get rid of it right away!
  7. Map out your life. That’s right, use today as a starting point and begin to create a map of what you want your life to look like, 6 months from now, 1 year from now, 5 years from now and beyond. It’s really about taking goal setting to a new level! Use lifelines (deadlines are terrifying) and really start to think about what you want to happen, how you want to feel and who you want to become in the process. I often feel like Peter Pan in that I never want to grow up and take the JOY out of living. I often dread going on vacation because I’m afraid I’m going to get behind and then I realize, that’s what I’m working for! I’m working hard so I can take some fun vacations! None of us knows for sure how much time we have on this earth so all we can do is make the most of every moment and plan for good things to come! There are so many ways to focus on what’s good but our natural tendency is to focus on what’s wrong. I remember just after my mother had passed away I was really down with grief and then a few months later my grandson Ryan was born and I realized, everything is a cycle. Someone I loved very much left my life but now someone new was coming in and it was up to me to open my eyes and heart to this new person. Even though I still miss my mother every single day I know I must open my heart to others, enjoy my blessings and live my life joyously helping as many people as possible. 5 Simple Steps to Set Yourself Up for Success!

LIKE THIS ARTICLE? Don’t forget to share it with your friends! smiley

Are YOU in it to Win it? How do you go after success? Do you quit when the going gets too tough or do you get up bruised and battered and go at it again? As a child I never really learned how to succeed, in fact the truth is I was a quitter! I hated to embarrass myself in front of others so rather than try again, I would usually just sit and sulk on the sidelines (go figure, the motivator needed motivation.) LOL, I think the first thing I really went after and didn’t give up on was getting my man and I’m pleased to say, I’m glad I didn’t quit as we’ve been married over 40 years!

Anyway, I really think too many people quit while they are down (or down in the dumps) and they don’t even realize that success could be right around the corner! I thought I’d share a few of the simple steps I take to get myself back in the game and on track for the success I want in my life and my business!

1. Set clear, precise goals with strict deadlines. What exactly do you want? When do you want it by? How are you going to get it? What are the steps you need to take in order to make it happen? Brian Tracy says, “Take your goal and work backwards, figuring out each step that you need to take in order to make it happen.” If you have a Sales goal of $50,000 for the year divide it by 12months or better yet break it down by weeks. You will need $4, 166.67 per month or $96154 per week.

Tip: Give yourself a break and set your weekly goal a little higher so  you will have completed your goals with 2 -4 weeks to spare. If you sell $1000 per week you will have accomplished your goal in 50 weeks (you can take the holidays off!) If you sell $1100 per week you will have accomplished your goal in 46 weeks. Whatever your case, I always suggest you give yourself a little breathing room so you’re not stressed at the end of the contest period or sales  year.

2. Know and Understand the Facts. It’s much easier for us to jump to conclusions when we’re not on target to reach our goals, than it is to analyze what’s really happening in our business & our life. You should be TRACKING everything you can track so you know where you can improve! It’s crazy to set a goal to improve in a certain area when you don’t have a starting point. Let’s say you want to weigh 20 pounds less by December 31′st. You have to have a starting point in order to know if you have reached your goal. In business many people say they want to improve but they don’t know by how much. To be successful in any endeavor it’s important to become a facts and figures person. Always be in a constant state of re-evaluation. I re-evaluated and adjusted what I needed to do to reach my goals at the end of every week for some short term contests and at the end of every month for long term contests.

If you have a couple bad weeks or a bad month it’s easier to get back on track right away when you have re-adjusted the amount that needs to be done. Let’s use the $50,000 yearly sales example again and say you had a less than stellar January and February and your total sales for the 2 months was $3000 which means you are $5,333.34 of the pace you need for the year. You have to take the balance you need $47,000 and divide it by the remaining 10 months and you now need $4,700 each month! Repeat after me, “To achieve my goals I need to track and re-adjust every month.”

3. Realize that most situations are temporary. Often a slump is self-induced (most of mine are) and they are brought on when we quit doing the RIGHT things that worked in the past. It’s very easy to get the “shiny object syndrome” and start trying lots of new stuff which distracts us and takes us away from a previously successful system! YIKES, I know it’s hard to blame ourselves and much easier to blame the lousy economy or other outside factors but the truth is more often than not it’s US! It is what it is, “put your Big Girl Panties On” (or Big Boy Boxers” and deal with it and then move on!

Always keep working on your goal! Don’t stop or you’ll get sucked in just like the millions of others who had good intentions but poor work ethics! It’s easier to gain momentum if you don’t quit moving. Making sales and customer service calls, sending thank you notes, asking for referrals are just a couple of the things you can do to keep the momentum going. You never know when your next boost will come but I guarantee it will come lots faster when you are heading in a upward direction instead of a downward spiral!

4. Reward Yourself and Stay Motivated. The hardest part of reaching any worthwhile goal is maintaining the same action steps you used in the beginning through the entire time you’re working on reaching your goal. We get bored, we get antsy, we get frustrated and we often lack the motivation to keep at anything for a long period of time and so we quit! It’s hard to keep making phone calls when you get voice mail after voice mail, or you hear no again and again. It’s hard to stay motivated when you lose 4 pounds your first week and week 5 you only lose a half a pound.

You MUST STAY MOTIVATED! You can listen to motivational material over and over again. You can say mantras out loud each and every day. You can also make sure you reward yourself when you reach milestones along the way. Let’s say the $50,000 yearly sales goal is what you need to earn a free trip. Have built in rewards for  yourself each time you hit a $10,000 increment. Your first $10,000 might be a new piece of luggage, the second thousand might be a new outfit to wear on the trip, you get the point. The rewards you give yourself motivate YOU to keep going to the next mile-marker! It’s important you reward yourself immediately and don’t save them up and do it all at one time. Motivation is key when you want to stay on track for success but the rewards don’t have to come from  an outside source, they can just as easily come from you!

5. Reach One Goal and Set Another. I’ve watched so many people go up and down in their business and their life because goal setting doesn’t become a HABIT with them! Many people reach a goal and then hit the skids, just the same as putting on the brakes in a car. The reason is simple, they failed to plan for their next accomplishment. The time to begin planning your next goal is BEFORE you complete the one you are currently working on. Failure to plan in advance will cause you to wander aimlessly in pursuit of nothing. You won’t know what to do because you won’t have a clear and precise picture of what you want to accomplish.

That’s it, I’m stopping right now to write down a few goals of my own! Okay, I’m done! Want to know what they are? Well one thing I learned over the years is to share my goals with people who can help me so the first one is “I will book 25 speaking engagements in 2013!” If I’m not scheduled to speak at your company you can help by finding out who hires your speakers and referring me to them, then email me an let me know who you talked to! The second goal is to complete “Dream Big and Design Your Destiny” the book I am currently working on by June 2013! I’ll design the chapters and set a target date to complete each chapter and when I’m done I’ll have “chocolate!” Don’t know where that came from, could be because of the new sugar-free lifestyle I’m pursuing. A little reward never hurt anyone, Right?

If you have any questions or you’d like to know more about how I set and pursued my goals in business and life check out my “Blueprint for Success and Prosperity” and get yourself on the Path to Success today!

Lifestyle Freedom With Your Direct Selling Business

I loved having my own successful direct selling business for twenty-five years. The parties were fun, my team was awesome and the money was a whole lot better than I would have been earning from my 9 -5 job! I earned 22 trips around the world and more contest prizes than I ever could have imagined when I first began selling in 1978.

Because, direct selling was so good for me I’m often saddened when consultants tell me they aren’t getting what they want from their business. I love the tenacity, ambition, work ethic and creativity displayed by successful direct sellers. It’s Independence Weekend  and I thought it would be fitting to share a few of the success tips that helped use my direct selling business to provide financial independence as well as the “lifestyle freedom” that is so important to many of us:

1. Set your goals! I know, you’ve been told this over and over and over again and you are probably sick and tired of hearing it. Truth is, if you don’t set your goals you’ll be halfheartedly working your business and shouldn’t expect much success. It’s been proven over and over again, those who have goals do better and EARN MORE!
2. Work Weekly! If you aren’t working your business on a weekly basis it’s just a hobby. Don’t plan monthly activity plan for weekly activity. Hold parties every week. Make follow up calls every week. Interview prospects every week. The consistency you’ll develop by doing things weekly will dramatically increase your sales and your paycheck.
3. Attend Trainings & Meetings! Only foolish people would attempt to begin their business with no training. Only non-committed consultants would continue in the business without support and continuing their education. If you want to succeed you’ll be where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there. NO EXCUSES…Find a Way!
4. Work harder on yourself than you do on your business. It doesn’t matter how hard you try if your attitude is lousy. Most successful people will tell you they work on their attitude and other success habits on a daily basis. Listen to motivational CDs. Listen to training CDs. Talk positively to yourself. Get away from the quick-sand crowd and start hanging out with winners.
5. Do the RIGHT THINGS, the RIGHT WAY. It’s not how much time you spend in your business it’s whether or not you are doing the right things while you are working. You can be busy doing things that won’t bring in income and in that case, you’ll still be broke. Or you can get smart and start doing things the right way. Got lots of party cancellations? People who mail invites for their hostesses experience less than a 20% cancellation rate. Your recruits lazy? People who have successful recruits know what to do to get them off to the best start. You’ve got to do things the RIGHT WAY!
6. Get healthy NOW! It’s hard to get things done fast when your energy is dragging. If you smoke, STOP! (I know it’s easy to say because I’ve never smoked but the truth is…it’s killing you. If you’re over-weight, LOSE IT! I’ve been a Weight Watchers lifetime member for 20 years and I’ve invested in JJ Virgin’s Fat Loss program last year which helped me take off 18 pounds and get healthier in the process. If you don’t exercise, GET MOVING! Doing the right things for your body won’t guarantee that you won’t get sick but you’ll feel much better all the way around and you will usually have greater energy which is a must when you have your own business. If you are too tired or sick to get it done, it usually won’t get done.
7. Invest in Yourself. People who invest in themselves and their business BELIEVE they will be successful. When I come across a product that I know can help me or my business I get it. Not investing in myself is like telling my subconscious, “who are you fooling, you can’t make money doing this?” I already told you to work harder on yourself than you do on your business so don’t let your negative thoughts influence you when making decisions. If you BELIEVE you will succeed you’ll make decisions with an abundance mentality rather than a lack mentality. I provide some of the best motivational and direct selling tools on the planet. Check them out.

I’ve learned that strategies for growing a successful direct selling business are not unique to certain individuals or companies. Success is determined by the use of predictable, repeatable, simple actions but not just any actions – the right actions. The driving force behind your success is YOU! Are you ready for the challenge?

Meeting & Training Success Action Steps

I just returned home from a 4-day training event I attended in Las Vegas and my brain was on overload with all the information I learned in these jam-packed sessions! Has this ever happened to you? Have you attended an event and you listen, take notes and then come home on overload and put the notes away and never get around to making any changes in your life or business? Well, I have to confess that as good as I am at taking control, I often find myself out-of-control after seminars and training because I didn’t take the time to immediately create my action plan with a FEW STEPS I COULD TAKE IMMEDIATELY!

This training was quite an investment on my part so I knew I wanted to get everything I could out of it PLUS MORE! So can I share five secrets on what I did during and after the event to get results?

1. I wrote my notes in the meeting binder so they would be in one place for review instead of writing on my own legal pad and then wondering where I put it! :) Actually had quite a few fill-in-the-blank handouts so it just made sense instead of re-writing everything which I am often inclined to do!

2. Took my “yearly notebook” where I have all my notes for the year as well as goals and list of things to do each week with me to the event. At the end of each day I reviewed my notes and created a list of things that I had to do “this week” and checked to see what needed to go on the list. In other words, anything that was a “must do right away item.”

3. Kept my meeting binder and notebook with me in my carry-on traveling home and re-read ALL MY NOTES from the training! This is very important because we do not retain past 48 hours 95% of the information we hear! During the review process I discovered a few more items that needed to be added to my must do this week list.

4. Numbered my “must do list” from this weekend in order of importance and made sure there were less than 7 things on the list which gives me a much better chance of ACTUALLY GETTING IT DONE!

5. Started doing the things on your list the very next day! DON’T WAIT! The longer you wait the less likely you are to implement what you learned. I’ve discovered over the years the fastest way to success is to implement what you learned immediately into your business. Don’t wait to do it perfectly just get it done!

Stuff Happens!

Last Friday was one of those crazy days where you just wonder what else can go wrong. First of all I don’t like getting up at 5:00 a.m. it’s still DARK, but Larry and I were heading to Jacksonville, FL for a weekend event.

On the way to the airport we had to get off the expressway to avoid an accident which added 20 minutes to the ride. Finally got to the parking structure  and discovered it was backed up because the gates going to the employee section were broken so they couldn’t go anywhere and they were blocking the entrance for commuters. While we were waiting the “low fuel” warning came on.

Finally parked, unloaded the car and as I was rushing to check-in my suitcase got caught in a crack which sent me flying. I picked myself up made it to check in and got to the gate just as they were boarding first class.  (Luckily, Larry and I were upgraded so we got on and settled in. The plane pushed back and we sat and sat. The pilot told us we had mechanical problems so we headed back to the gate for one hour. Finally landed about one hour late went to hotel changed clothes and got down to the meeting with 2 minutes to spare.

The funny thing was, as soon as I walked into the meeting “I was ON!” What about you? Do you ever have days when Murphy’s Law strikes you and everything that can go wrong will go wrong? Maybe you have a party that night and you are thinking to yourself,  “I really don’t want to go” but you go anyway and it’s a great party! Sometimes, stuff happens to us and there is nothing we can do about it.

Things don’t always go the way we plan them but sooner or later you have to come out of hiding, face the world and hop back into whatever your next task is. The rest of weekend was great! So even if your days starts out messy you can still have some success!

What do you do for fun?

Last night I went out with my “Red Hat” friends for our monthly get-together. One of the ladies picked an awesome new Italian Restaurant and I must say my Almond Encrusted Perch was to die for. The waitress made a great wine selection for us and we ate and drank for almost 3 hours sharing stories, telling jokes and just laughing and having fun.

When I came home I felt totally rejuvenated and alive!

The reason I’m sharing this is that too often we get so busy with all our daily activities, family, job, business, church, school and everyone and everything else we have to answer to and for that we don’t make time for us!

So, stop what you’re doing right now, call a friend and make a date to get together for lunch, dinner, coffe, movie or whatever it is that tickles your fancy. Don’t wait until you are burned out, stressed out, fed up and ready to shoot the next person who asks you a question.  Save your sanity by taking a much deserved break today.

My Favorite Daily Prayer

Someone shared this prayer with me over a year ago and I typed it an put it with my daily reading materials. I must say, this prayer has helped me get through some very challenging and sorrowful times. Take time to read it and I know it will become one of your daily inspirations.

“Dear Lord, I thank you for this day. I thank You for my being able to see and to hear this morning. I’m blessed because You are a forgiving God and an understanding God. You have done so much for me and You keep on blessing me. Forgive me this day for everything I have done, said or thought that was not pleasing to you. I ask now for your forgiveness.

Please keep me safe from all danger and harm! Help me to start this day with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude. Let me make the best of each and every day to clear my mind so that I can hear from You.

Please broaden my mind that I can accept all things.

Let me not whine and whimper over things I have no control over. Let me continue to see sin through God’s eyes and acknowledge it as evil. And when I sin, let me repent, and confess with my mouth my wrongdoing, and receive the forgiveness of God.

And when this world closes in on me, let me remember Jesus’ example — to slip away and find a quiet place to pray. It’s the best response when I’m pushed beyond my limits. I know that when I can’t pray, You listen to my heart. Continue to use me to do Your will.

Continue to bless me that I may be a blessing to others. Keep me strong that I may help the weak. Keep me uplifted that I may have words of encouragement for others. I pray for those who are lost and can’t find their way. I pray for those who are misjudged and misunderstood. I pray for those who don’t know You intimately. I pray for those who don’t believe. But I thank you that I believe.

I believe that God changes people and God changes things. I pray for all my sisters and brothers and for each and every family member in their households. I pray for peace, love and joy in their homes that they are out of debt and all their needs are met.

I pray to understand there is no problem, circumstance, or situation greater than God. Every battle is in Your hands for You to fight. I pray that these words be received into the hearts of every eye that sees them and every mouth that confesses them willingly.

This is my prayer. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Thanksgiving Tribute to My Parents

On this Thanksgiving Day I would like to share with all of you the Special Letter I wrote to my parents. I hope you’ll enjoy it and take time to be thankful for all you have.

Dear Mom and Dad,  As I thank God for all the years we have had both of you I wish to share the influence you have made on all of us. These are just a few of the wonderful life’ lessons we have learned from you.

To Believe in God, our family, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, The Tooth Fairy and miracles.

To have Faith that no matter what happens we can get through things together. We are never alone as long as we have God in our hearts and family by our side.

To Cherish family & friendships above all. Things are just things but family and friends are treasures that last forever.

To Hope for a better future for all. To hope that those we love will live long and healthy lives.

To Give to those who are less fortunate than we are. It doesn’t matter how little we have there are always those who have less than we do. You will be surprised at what you can do without when you are giving to others.

To Encourage others as often as you can. It’s OK to shout and cheer at games and activities. We need to let everyone know we are there!

To Celebrate every holiday, birthday, graduation, promotion, wedding, and new baby together. It’s not always easy but it is always fun to have the large family gatherings. The stress of preparation will give way to the joy of togetherness.

To Forgive others for the things they have said or done that may have offended or hurt us. To ask God’s forgiveness for the times we have let Him down.

To be strong when you need to and mushy when you can’t. If mom can cry at Hallmark commercials I can too!

To Love unconditionally. Love can overcome anything. Hugs and kisses are OK for everyone! That as long as there is love in your heart you will never be alone in our family.

To Give Thanks and count our blessings not our misfortunes. There are always things to be grateful for even in difficult times. To give thanks to God every day for all of our blessings.

To Pray to God for the strength to live each day as if it was our last. To pray and prepare so when our time on earth passes we may be reunited in Heaven.

 I Love You!
Karen

Family Love

Most of you don’t know that I come from a large family of seven, five girls and two boys. I am blessed to still have both of my parent’s as well as my husband Larry’s parent’s here with us. Larry and I have two wonderful sons and I couldn’t ask for better daughter-in-laws. Oh, by the way, have I showed you the latest picture of the apple of my eye, my grandson, Nickolas? Tomorrow we’ll be celebrating our 37′th wedding anniversary and my mom and dad will be celebrating their 59′th. I look at all I have and I know how I am blessed to have such a family to love. Families are the best! We’re having family pictures taken  so watch for some soon!

At my seminars this past weekend I asked everyone to share what they were thankful for in their business. Everyone, without exception said they were thankful for the new friends they made in their business. They all felt the people they knew from their business was like another extended family.

Isn’t it wonderful to belong to something that instead of being a number, you are a person? That’s what each and every one of you have when you belong to a Direct Selling Company. The friendships, support from your upline and company, people to travel and have fun with, hostesses and guests to party with. What a wonderful place to be!!
